Marion Motley: A Football Legend
By Marty Gitlin

It is widely accepted that a Cleveland Browns player was the greatest running back in NFL history.

Paul Brown, for whom the team is named, also believed that a man he coached was the best ever.

Jim Brown, right?

Well, no. Though many feel Jim Brown is the premier back to ever grace a football field, his namesake offered a different opinion.

The late Paul Brown felt Marion Motley has had no equal.

The same Marion Motley who ran roughshod over the competition for the
University ofNevada in the early 1940s. The same Marion Motley who in 1968 became the first African-American to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The same Marion Motley who, most impressively, was as devastating a linebacker as he was a running back.

Motley died in 1999 at the age of 79. But his alma mater will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of his induction into the Hall of Fame throughout the football season. His image will be placed on the Mackay Stadium scoreboard during the Nov. 22 game against
Boise State…

The entire article on Motley can be seen in the October issue of Wolf Pack Edge.
